6217 former street children have passed by Abadacogora-Intwari center before being rehabilitated.

Father Donatien Twizeyumuremyi, director of Caritas Kigali says that in April 2017 the report of a research conducted by Abadacogora-Intwari Center indicated that 6217 children have passed by this center before being rehabilitated.

“Activities started in 1984, it is now 35 years since we started rehabilitate street children and send them back in their families” he says.

In 1985 another Center in Nyamirambo was created, while in 1987 Intwari center located on Sainte Famille was used to welcoming female street children.

“The objective was to provide education to those children by sending them back in their families and schools in order to help them change behaviors, develop themselves and feeling themselves in Rwandan society” adds Father Twizeyumuremyi.

He adds that among children who passed by the center since 1984 until 2014, Abadacogora-Intwari Center paid school fees for more than 2947 who were sent back to school.

Between 2005 and 2015 the center welcomed 1683 children who apparently had parents, whereas after the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi the center welcomed 678 from 1995 to 2004.

Among children rehabilitated in Abadacogora-Intwari Center, 24.6% afforded to study primary studies, 25% studied in Training and Vacational schools, 7% afforded to finish their secondary school studies, while 2.8% afforded to go to university.

This shows the achievement made by Caritas Kigali through Abadacogora-Intwari Center.

Children who have passed by this center say the knowledge and education they acquired from Abadacogora-Intwari paved their way to development, as indicates Clemence Uwihirwe who was rehabilitated by this center.

She says that after being sent back in her family the center kept following her and paid school fees to her until she finishes studying.

“I can’t find words to express my feelings because they supported me and employed me. Now I can take care of my family of 8 people” she adds.

Ernestine Nyirimpuhwe who studies in GS Rwankuba in Rulindo district also is pleased with the support she got from the center. She is now convinced that her future will be brighter.

Most of former street children rehabilitated by this center say that the education they acquired from the center and the efforts of their teachers mad them change their bad behaviors. But some of them say that after being rehabilitated they didn’t get any other support to develop themselves.
