Most Children go on street because of different problems they face in their families.

Former street children can become normal citizens and contribute in developing the country whenever there is someone take care of them.

Such children are most of time marginalized in the society by people who consider them as threat on the society.

Even though some people consider street children as a threat on society, most of them go on street because of different problems they face in their families.

Caritas Kigali’s Abadacogora-Intwari indicates children do not contribute in most of the problems which push them to go on street. Father Donatien Twizeyumuremyi says that poverty, conflicts in families, and irresponsibility are among other problems that incite children to go on street.

This is the reason why street children problem persists because its main causes also persist in families.

Father Twizeyumuremyi says that the first step to eradicate street children problem is to rehabilitate them and prepare counselling sessions for them, before supporting them both socially and financially.

Their parents also get financial support to enable them fulfill families’ basic needs.

This has been fruitful because when children are sent back in their families they try to stay in families rather than going back on street. This is the reason why each and every person should take care of street children to eradicate the problem.

To fight against this problem, the government of Rwanda has established the National Rehabilitation Services (NRS) in order to find solutions to street children problem.

On 26th June, 2018, the Deputy Director of NRS, ACP Gilbert Rwampungu Gumira, while celebrating the African child day, said that there are measures taken by both NRS and Abadacogora-Intwari to tackle the problem of street children.

ACP Gumira urged parents, Teachers and local authorities in general to try their best in finding solutions to the problem and taking care of street children to get them rehabilitated.

NRS is in charge of coordinating government and private rehabilitation centers to insure that human rights, rules and regulations are applied in those centers.
