Former street children are being taught sexual and reproductive health to protect them against unwanted pregnancies.

Children between 6 and 11 years old hosted by Caritas Kigali’s Abadacogora-Intwari Center are benefiting from those lessons as indicates Josiane Mushashi, the Coordinator of the center.

They are told about the function and development of their reproductive organs and how to ensure good hygiene of the genitals.

Children aging from 12 to 18 years old are grouped together while providing them lessons on sexual and reproductive health.

Girls and boys get knowledge on the way of insuring good intimate hygiene and the hygiene of their underwear, especially for girls when they are in periods. Girls who saw their first periods are taught to count their menstrual cycle.

They are also advised not to have unprotected sex to avoid unwanted pregnancies because a girl is likely to get pregnant whenever she has unprotected sex while in periods.

The boys are prepared to be ready for possible changes in their bodies, especially the Spermarche - where the boy may have his first unconscious ejaculation, rock voice, pubic and beard.

At this stage boys can also impregnate girls whenever they have unprotected sex, which can even lead to being caught by sexually transmitted diseases.

Some of children hosted in Abadacogora-Intwari Center assure that these lessons help them to know the development and changes in their bodies, especially everything related to sexual and reproductive health.

“They teach us everything about the development of our bodies to avoid unwanted pregnancies and sex that may lead us to being caught by sexually transmitted diseases” says one of former street children hosted in the center.

They are now able to know any change in their bodies thanks to the sexual and reproductive health lessons they acquired from the center. Girls are able to know that their periods are approaching, and can get prepared before seeing their periods.
