Caritas Kigali indicates that family planning is one way of finding solutions to street children’s problem.
Father Donatien Twizeyumuremyi, director of Caritas Kigali requested parents whose children are former street children to adopt family planning to limit the number of children who keep going on street.
During the meeting he held with those parents on November 27th 2018, he reminded them to plan for their children and avoid giving birth to many children surpass families’ capacity and become burden to their families.
Parents are requested to adopt family planning as most of street children say that they run away from their families because their parents were not fulfilling their responsibilities towards children.
“Who among you can afford to feed six children? You don’t have means, and this is the reason why you have to adopt family planning” Father Twizeyumuremyi told parents.
The family planning will make parents give birth to few children they can afford to raise. Father Twizeyumuremyi adds that parents should not even give birth to a single child whenever they do not feel capable to raise them.
Angelique Mutegarugori is among parents whose children are former street children. She also agree with Father Twizeyumuremyi saying that her child went on street because of poverty, as she was no longer able to feed him.
She acknowledge that giving birth to many children becomes a serious problem to parents as they cannot fulfill their responsibilities towards those children.
“Even though I was granted support from Abadacogora-Intwari rehabilitation Center, it was not easy for me to raise six children myself without means” she says.
Adopting the natural family planning methods is among many other programs that the center urges parents to adopt, for them to afford to raise their children appropriately.
