The joint efforts between Christian communities (Imiryango-remezo) and families would eradicate street children’s problem.

Christian communities locally known as “Imiryango-remezo” are to help families to find solutions to problems that push children to go on street.

This was communicated by Mgr. André Havugimana who chairs the family commission in Kigali Archdiocese, in a meeting between this commision, Caritas Kigali and government institutions held on June 2nd, 2018.

The meeting aimed at finding solutions to street children’s problems.

Mgr. Havugimana says the joint efforts between Christian communities (Imiryango-remezo) and families would eradicate street children’s problem.

He adds that government institutions should support former street children sending them to rehabilitation centers to help them change mindset behaviors.

“Joining our efforts together we can eradicate street children problem, especially by visiting families with problems” adds Mgr. Havugimana.

Caritas Kigali’s Abadacogora-Intwari started rehabilitating street children since 1984 focusing on improving those children’s welfare to prevent them going back on street.

Father Donatien Twizeyumuremyi, director of Caritas Kigali says that they tried to look for solutions for this problem using four methods but still persist.

The first method is to welcome street children, improving their wellbeing, send them back in their families and schools and improving their families’ welfare by providing financial support.

The meeting aimed at reinforcing partnership to prevent children going back on street.

Father Twizeyumuremyi adds that they will keep on advocating for children who left school and support them before they end up going on street. Families with major problems that are considered as root causes of street children problem also get both financial and advisory support.

Caritas Kigali and the Commission in charge of family will work jointly to improve street children’s welfare, and advocating for former street children to get official documents allowing them to be admitted in different schools.

Rukundo Honoré in charge of social affairs in Nyakabanda sector was a participant in that meeting. He says that government institutions are going reinforce their collaboration with caritas Kigali and the commission in charge of family.
