Father Donatien Twizeyumuremyi, director of Caritas Kigali says that the root cause of street children’s problem is poor education in some families.
Parents who never take care of their children are one of major causes of delinquency, because some of street children run away from their families to look for solutions of poverty related problems.
This is the reason Father Twizeyumuremyi says that parents who cannot afford to raise children shouldn’t give birth to future street children.
“It’s better not to give birth to a child that you won’t raise because they will be a burden to Rwandan society”
Among other causes of delinquency includes poverty in families, but father Twizeyumuremyi says that lazy parents who don’t work for their families put them in critical situations, as they can’t fulfill their children’s basic needs.
This the reason why Caritas Kigali provide support to vulnerable families to start small businesses that can generate money to fulfill their families basic needs.
Some parents don’t acknowledge their weakness in raising children appropriately, they rather link the delinquency problem to the poverty in families.
One of the children who were rehabilitated from street by Abadacogora-Intwari center, says he decided to go on street after realizing that his mother were not taking care of him, as she couldn’t afford to fulfill his basic needs.
The 7 years old boy went on street with a target to look for the rehabilitation center which would accept to welcome him.
“I was on street and reported myself to authorities. I had already realized that my parents were not able to fulfill my needs and decided to go on street as I couldn’t get food in my family. I told authorities to send me to Gitagata rehab Center” He says.
Alvera Ntawuziryayo, a parent to this child, acknowledges that she has been irresponsible, even though she says that she couldn’t fulfill her responsibilities because of poverty.
“I’m a mother of seven children including twins who were born after this one. After realizing that I were no longer concentrating my efforts on him he started his life on street” Ntawuziryayo says.
Ntawuziryayo thinks that her child went on street because all his mother’s efforts and concentration were being directed to those twins. His seven years old boy were no longer getting sufficient food.
She supports Father Twizeyumuremyi’s idea saying that it’s better not to give birth to children if you can’t afford to raise them.
