Parents with children who have been rehabilitated from street are urged to take care of them. They are also urged to create friendship with those children raising them with discipline as they usually acquire bad behaviors on street.
They were urged by Josiane Mushashi, the coordinator of Caritas Kigali’s Abadacogora-Intwari project in charge of rehabilitating street children. She says that after rehabilitating street children, parents should start taking care of those children to prevent them going back to street.
After rehabilitating street children they are sent in families, but some of them don’t change their bad behaviors acquired from street.
“Parents should create friendship with those children and take care of them. Those children need special treatment in order to prevent them going back to street” says Mushashi.
She adds that the fact that some of rehabilitated children who were sent back to school still have bad behaviors acquired on street, is another fact showing that those children need special treatment.
Emmanuel Munyankumburwa, a teacher on Shango Primary School in Nduba Sector, Gasabo District also recommends parents to take care of former street children because they most of time show bad behaviors while on school.
“It’s not easy for former street children to live with their colleagues, because they most of time quarrel with their classmates because of their very different behaviors” says Munyankumburwa.
Bosenibamwe Aimé, Director General of the Rwanda National Rehabilitation Service (NRS) says that the creation of NRS is one of the majors the government put in place to rehabilitate street children.
He adds that NRS helps in providing core values to rehabilitated street children.
Father Donatien Twizeyumuremyi, director of Caritas Kigali, Abadacogora-Intwari not only rehabilitate street children, but also continue to follow them in their families and help them change behaviors and progress.
“These children require a day to day follow up. Parents should have an eye on them because when they don’t get a special treatment they go back on street” says Father Twizeyumuremyi.
He says that they will continue taking care of street kids with the government support. They first focus on problems that are considered as root causes that push children to go on street.
