Rehabilitating children in centers far from cities helped them to change their bad behaviors as they can’t face temptations as they used to while in cities.
Majors to help former street children include rehabilitating them in centers far from cities to prevent them face temptations which incite them to go back on street.
Caritas Kigali’s Abadacogora-Intwari Center which take care of street children has set up another center in Rweru sector, Bugesera district which will welcome children from street to rehabilitate them in society.
Father Donatien Twizeyumuremyi, Director of Caritas Kigali says that they chose to send children in that center located in Nyiragiseke, because it is a bit far from the city where they cannot face temptations inciting them to go back on street. The fact that the center is far from the city helps their mentors to take care of them as well, he adds.
“The objective of building this center was to help children getting familiar with life in rural areas and prevent them to envy things that can incites them to go back in cities to live on street”
He adds that the center helped much as their mentors show them how life in rural areas is better than life in cities especially when they are living on street.
The other benefit of rehabilitating children far from cities is that, when they are sent back in their families they stay in their families, and you’ll most of time realize that they no longer want to go back in cities.
The center was designed to host 50 children but it can only host few boys after fire broke out at the center.
Fire broke out at the center on March 5th, 2018 and damaged the dormitory for girls and the center’s dining room for. The center was forced to limit the number of children it can host because of those facilities which were caught by fire, and can’t host female children as there is no dormitory for them.
Even though the center cannot host the number of children it was designed to, the few boys that it host change and no longer go back on street because thanks to the mentorship they acquire in the center.
The Rwanda National Rehabilitation Services (NRS) also supports the idea of rehabilitating children far from the cities, as it also has rehab centers in Gitagata, Bugesera district, Iwawa in Rubavu district and one in Nyagatare district.
The NRS assures that children addicted to drug use and other bad behaviors change their mindset and behaviors when they are sent in rehabilitation centers far from cities.
